City Planning
Goals: to understand major social issues facing urban areas such as poverty, crime, and racism and to explore possible solutions; to experience the urban planning process and practice in-depth research.
Project: Working in teams, students developed detailed redevelopment plans for Treasure Island. Students read a number of articles on how place affects people's lives. Classes spent a day visiting the site to gather information about the current conditions and conducted interviews with members of several demographic groups who would be stakeholders in an urban redevelopment project. They reviewed development plans from projects across the country and worked with architects to sketch out ideas for how to lay out a city that meets the needs of all its citizens. Pictures of this event and the results are below.

Teams split up responsibility for writing sections of the final report. Each student focused on one or more areas to research and write a proposal coordinated with the rest of their team's proposals. Sections included history, current conditions, and plans for transportation, communications, housing, education, emergency services, alternative energy, green space, and commerce. The proposals were presented at a community exhibition and the final reports, 30-45 pages long, were sent to the Treasure Island Development Authority.
